Carolyn Cudone - Myrtle Beach Golf Pioneer - has died

Carolyn Cudone, one of the pioneers of the Grand Strand golf industry has died at the age of 90 just one week after her induction into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame.

Cudone is one of the greatest female champions in the history of the United States Golf Association, and is the founder of the Myrtle Beach Junior Golf Program.

Her streak of five consecutive U.S. Women's Senior Amateur Championships from 1968-72 is the longest stretch of consecutive wins in any USGA championship. She also won seven South Carolina Women's Amateur titles, dozens of New Jersey state and New York area amateur titles, and played on one U.S. Curtis Cup team and captained another. She was a guest at last year's historic Curtis Cup at St. Andrews in Scotland from May 30-June 1.

Cudone started the junior program in 1981 and ran it as a volunteer for 21 years, until she handed over the reigns at the age of 83. It has since merged with a program run by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association.

In addition to the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame - the inaugural six-person class was inducted last Thursday at Pine Lakes Country Club - Cudone is in the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame and South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, and was a recipient of the 2008 Winnie Palmer Award.

The award is named in honor of Arnold Palmer's benevolent and late wife, and Cudone, a Staten Island native, was selected to receive it by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association of New York. It recognizes an individual who has consistently given their time, energy and enthusiasm to those less fortunate.
