Frequently Asked Questions About Myrtle Beach

Where is Myrtle Beach?

Directly on the South Carolina Atlantic coast, some thirty miles south of the North/South Carolina border, right at the heart of the 60-mile stretch of white sands known as the "Grand Strand,". Myrtle Beach is the city with the most recognizable name, but the resort area stretches from Georgetown in the south, through Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Surfside Beach, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Atlantic Beach, Little River, then crosses into North Carolina and includes Calabash and the coastal areas of Brunswick County. See our map for more info.

What's the weather like?

We do have seasons - long, balmy spring and equally-pleasant fall (average temperature 75 degrees F - understandably, the favorite golfing seasons), short, cool winters (temperatures average 56 degrees F - with Winter snowbirds our most enthusiastic golfers), and short, hot summers (temperatures 89 degrees F - and family time).

What is the beach like?

Clean, firm, level and made of fine white sand It is one of the world's broadest, and longest uninterrupted beaches. In the summer the seawater temperature reaches the high eighties (F). How many golf courses are there? Over 100 courses by top designers, geared to every playing level.

What accommodations are available?

Better than 60,000 accommodations units, ranging from modest motel rooms to magnificent luxury oceanfront penthouses.Be assured - there's something here to suit every wish, and every wallet.

What is a "Golf Package?"

Developed right here in Myrtle Beach, a "Golf Package" is a trouble-free way to schedule a golf vacation for your group. All you need do is let your accommodations' Golf Director know your arrival and departure dates, and the courses you'd like to play (and if you aren't familiar with the courses, he or she will offer sound suggestions). Your schedule, with specific tee times, will then be confirmed, and sent to you. The pre-set per person charge generally covers accommodations, breakfast, and golf.

Does each hotel have its own golf course?

No - which is the key to the marvelous diversity of Myrtle Beach golf. Unlike other areas of the country, where play is limited to on-site courses, most of our area's accommodations facilities can schedule play for you on virtually all of the area's 100+ courses!

How can I get information from so many golf courses and accommodations?

Use our convenient info request form. Fill out one form, tell them what you're interested in, and your form goes out to ALL the accommodations and golf courses. They will get back to you with rates, specials, and info.

Are there any major golf tournaments?

Indeed, there are. Among them are the world's largest on-site amateur golf tournament, with more than 5000 players, the World Amateur Handicap Championship (played on more than 60 of the area's courses in late August)!

Are there any good restaurants?

What sort of food do you prefer? Among our 1,405 restaurants, you'll find everything from familiar fast-food chains and major theme venues to elegant, one-of-a-kind dining establishments; from Calabash-style seafood to Continental creations - whatever your taste buds crave - hot dogs to haute cuisine - you'll find it all here. Our sister publication, On The Beach, has a large list. (Use your BACK key to return)

You can view some of our favorite restaurants here.

Can I catch the subway near my hotel?

Sorry - public transportation is somewhat limited here. (But why would you want to go underground, when above ground is so much fun?) There are buses to major shopping centers, and a number of our accommodations facilities do have shuttle service to and from the airport or beach. And all major car rental agencies are represented here, offering very competitive rates.

Can I fly to Myrtle Beach?

You certainly can! Allegiant Air, Continental Airlines, Delta, Myrtle Beach Direct Air, Northwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, US Airways, and United Express are among the carriers serving Myrtle Beach at the Myrtle Beach International Airport. If you're staying and playing mainly on the north end of the area, you may want to fly into Wilmington, NC. The Wilmington International Airport is served by Allegiant Air, Delta, and US Airways. Just check with your travel agent or the airline's web site.

Are there any good places to shop?

Many people visit the area - specifically for the shopping opportunities! Enclosed malls; nature-friendly centers like Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach featuring dozens of delightful stores (together with restaurants and dining venues); groups of major factory outlets; one-of-a-kind boutiques and shops - everything from souvenir Ts to designer home furnishings - you'll find it all here. Good news for golfers - there is a discount golf merchandise store on just about every corner.

What's there to do after golf and the beach?

Do you enjoy theater? Clubs? Outdoor fun? All here. Broadway hits; the country's top musical artists, comedians, dance groups (including the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes), Elvis (and Dolly, Marilyn - even Blues Brothers impersonators), dinner theaters; an IMAX screen, Nascar Speed Park, aquarium, kiddie parks, water slides, and scintillating clubs all add delight to your Myrtle Beach visit.

Is there a good source of information about Myrtle Beach Golf (other than this web site) that I could get once a year and that wouldn't cost more than $6.00?

Yes. You can subscribe to On The Green Magazine, the paper version, which covers the Myrtle Beach area golf scene. By an amazing coincidence, it's published once each year ( in the fall) and a TWO- YEAR subscription is only $6.00 (US). Canadians please add $4.00. Foreign rates quoted on request. Send cash, check, or money order (US Dollars only) to: On the Green Magazine P.O. Box 1463 North Myrtle Beach, SC 29598 Include your mailing address, with ZIP or postal code.
